Court sentences mother, son to death over murder

An Owerri High Court, presided over by Justice Ngozi Opara, has sentenced a middle aged woman, Mrs. Felicia Uzoma and her 23-year-old son, Mr. Kelvin Uzoma of Umuozu Ngugo to death for the murder of nine year old Kasarachi Oforji, who was beheaded in 2006.
The incident occurred in Umuozu Ngugo community in Ikeduru Council Area of Imo State.
Delivering the judgment on the case with Suit No HM15C/2007, the presiding Judge held that the two accused were found guilty of the crime for which they were charged and were sentenced in accordance with the law of the land.
“In the face of all the evidence I hold strongly that the two accused persons committed the offense and should be sentenced in line with the provisions of the law. I hereby find them guilty as charged. You Mrs. Felicia Uzoma should be hanged by the neck till you are dead and you Mr. Kelvin Uzoma should also be hanged by the neck till you are dead.
“They should be remanded at the Maximum Security Prison in Port Harcourt pending the day of their execution, which will be determined by the Executive Governor of this state”, the judge ruled.
According to Justice Opara, the 1st accused person, Kelvin Uzoma pleaded not guilty, while the second accused and his mother, Felicia Uzoma, pleaded for leniency.
However, the presiding Judge said that his hands were tied, as the law of the land provides that anyone that takes the life of another must pay the supreme price by losing his life.
Meanwhile, a mild drama played outside the court as the octogenarian mother of the convicted woman, flung herself at the Black Maria that was carrying away her daughter and grandchild before she was pinned down by security operatives who pleaded with her to leave the court premises.
