Nigeria’s House of Representatives shelved its plenary to receive the victorious Super Eagles on Wednesday, a day after President Goodluck Jonathan hosted the team to a state reception in Abuja.
The president announced cash gifts, national honours and property for the team that triumphed over Burkina Faso to win the African Nations Cup.
Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, led the players and technical team into the House Chambers late morning to the standing ovation of the lawmakers in a historic recognition.
The team had earlier been applauded by the Senate which passed a vote of confidence on Keshi on Tuesday. Key players of the team were absent at the reception, having travelled back to their clubs abroad.
The lawmakers praised the federal government for the reception and gifts for the teams on Tuesday.
Speaker of the House, Aminu Tambuwal, described the victory as “uncommon and outstanding”, and said the feat gave hope to the nation, and demonstrated that Nigeria no longer has need for foreign coaches.
“To me and I believe for many Soccer loving Nigerians, it is only now that we can truly say that we have come of age in the game and never again shall we go cap in hand on a recruitment drive for foreign coaches,” the speaker said. “All we need do is to replicate Keshis, the Amokachis, the Siasias and others.”
Mr. Tambuwal pledged the support of the House for the Keshi-led team and challenged them to aspire for back-to-back wins.
Keshi thanked the speaker and the lawmakers for their financial support to the team.
